Swinging a heavier wood bat builds functional strength. Additional functional strength yields higher bat speed, which yields higher exit velocity, which yields further distance of hits.

Proper Technique

The smaller sweet spot of a wood bat provides physical feedback to the hitter. Mishits are no longer rewarded as they are from metal or composite bats. Proper technique and learning to properly barrel the ball consistently will bring improved results with metal and composite bats.

How to Hold the Bat

Hit with the logo facing you or away from you. Also referred to as logo facing up or down.

Hit on the Sweet Spot

While the sweet spot varies it is generally the last 8 inches of the bat excluding the final two inches.

Wood is a natural material that will inevitably wear out and break or the grain will delaminate. While this can not be prevented the best way to extend the life of your wood bat is too:

1. Hold your bat properly when hitting

2. Hit on the sweet spot.

3. Store your bat vertically in a cool dry climate controlled area.

4. Hit official leather baseballs only.

Other factors influencing the life of your wood bat are:

1. Billet weight of wood.

2. Quality of wood (slope of grain).

3. Handle thickness.
